What is CMYK?

CMYK is a color mode based on the principle of subtractive color mixing, mainly used in the printing industry. CMYK represents four basic colors: Cyan (cyan), Magenta (magenta), Yellow (yellow), and Key Plate (black, usually represented by K).
Unlike RGB (red, green, blue) mode, RGB is an additive color mixing mode used for screen display, while CMYK is a subtractive color mixing mode used for printing.
In CMYK mode, each color ink absorbs specific wavelengths of light in the spectrum and reflects other wavelengths of light. When these inks are mixed in different proportions, they absorb more light, resulting in different colors.
However, due to the incomplete transparency of ink and the reflectivity of paper, pure C, M, and Y mixtures usually cannot produce pure black, so black (K) needs to be added to enhance color depth and contrast.

The CMYK mode has a wide range of colors, especially in the printing field. It can cover most colors recognizable by human vision, and by precisely controlling the mixing ratio of each color ink, it can produce delicate and rich color effects.
Compared to RGB mode, CMYK mode can more accurately reproduce and present various colors during the printing process, especially in dark and dark tones.
The color expression of CMYK mode is also very strong. By adjusting the mixing ratio of C, M, Y, and K color inks, high contrast and saturation color effects can be produced, making printed materials more visually appealing.
CMYK mode also supports grayscale printing, which only uses black ink for printing and is suitable for printing black and white photos, text, and other content.

Disadvantages of CMYK color mode
1. Narrow color gamut: Compared to RGB color mode, CMYK color mode has a narrower color gamut. This means that in some cases, especially when presenting bright or highly saturated colors, the CMYK color mode may not fully restore the original color, resulting in color distortion.
2. Complex color management: The color management of CMYK color mode is relatively complex. This requires the use of professional color management software and equipment, such as color calibrators, color management software, and ICC color profiles.
3. High requirements for equipment and materials: In order to ensure the stability and consistency of CMYK color modes during the printing process, high-quality paper and printing equipment are needed, which can result in cost investment during the printing process.
4. Easily affected by ink quality and paper texture: The quality of ink and paper material have a significant impact on the printing effect of CMYK color mode. If the ink quality is poor or the paper material is not suitable for printing requirements, it may lead to color deviation, ink penetration and other problems.

Conversion and Compatibility
When converting an image from RGB mode to CMYK mode, attention should be paid to color loss and variation. Due to the fact that RGB and CMYK are two different color modes, their conversion may involve compression and expansion of the color space, resulting in color loss or variation.

CMYK mode has good compatibility. When converting, using professional image processing software to adjust and optimize color settings can make the converted image as close to the original image as possible in color.
In the printing industry, commonly used file formats such as PSD (Adobe Photoshop), AI (Adobe Illustrator), and PDF all support CMYK color mode. These formats not only have good compatibility and editability, but also ensure color consistency and accuracy in printed materials.
