Water-Based Ink MSDS: A Complete Safety Guide

Date: Feb 14 2025  From: Star Color

Water-based inks are widely used in various industrial production and daily applications. They are essential in industries such as cardboard box printing, medical device labeling, and breathable film processing. To ensure their safe use, a detailed Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is of great significance. Let's take an in-depth look at this MSDS for water-based inks to gain a comprehensive understanding.

Basic Product Information

This water-based ink is fully named "Water based acrylic copolymer mixture/organic pigment mixture". It is produced by HUIZHOU ZHONGZHIXING COLOR TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD and supplied globally. It is mainly used for printing on materials such as flexographic paper, non-woven fabric, woven fabric, and PE film. It is an environmentally friendly colored liquid.

Hazard Identification

According to EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, this water-based ink is classified as Skin Irritation Category 2 (Skin Irrit. 2) and labeled as GHS07. This means it may cause skin irritation. The relevant hazard statement is H315, which states "Causes skin irritation". In addition, the label also bears the signal word "Warning" and a series of precautionary statements, such as P101 (If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand), P102 (Keep out of reach of children), etc.

Composition Details

This water-based ink is a mixture of multiple substances, including 2-Propenoic acid, polymer with ethene (40 - 55%), water (5 - 20%), Ethene, homopolymer, oxidized (1 - 5%), and other components. Some of these components have specific hazard properties. For example, Carbon black (1.5 - 3.5%) and Titanium dioxide (1 - 3%) have workplace exposure limits, and monitoring is required during use.

First Aid Measures

In case of accidental contact with this water-based ink, appropriate first aid measures should be taken immediately. If inhaled, move to a place with fresh air and seek medical treatment if discomfort persists. In case of skin contact, remove contaminated clothing promptly and wash the skin with soap and water. If it gets into the eyes, lift the eyelids and rinse with flowing water or saline solution, then seek medical attention. If swallowed, attempt to vomit and seek medical help immediately.

Precautions for Firefighting, Leakage, Operation, and Storage

In terms of firefighting, suitable extinguishing agents should be selected according to the actual surrounding situation. In case of a leak, dilute with plenty of water to prevent it from entering sewers, surface water, or groundwater. Adsorb and clean it up with liquid-binding materials (such as sand, diatomite, etc.). During operation, follow general occupational hygiene measures and avoid contact with the skin and eyes. When storing, keep it away from foodstuffs. There are no special requirements for storage warehouses and containers.

Exposure Control and Personal Protection

To ensure the safety of operators, a series of exposure control measures should be implemented. For substances with limited components, such as carbon black and titanium dioxide, different countries have clear exposure limit regulations. In terms of personal protection, it is recommended to wear protective masks, gloves, goggles, and protective work clothing. However, due to the complex composition of the product, caution is needed when choosing gloves, considering factors such as the material's resistance to penetration.

Physical and Chemical Properties, Stability, and Toxicological Information

This water-based ink is in a liquid state, with a slight odor. Its melting point/freezing point is 250°C, boiling point is 100°C (760mmHg), flash point is greater than 200°C, and the pH value ranges from 8.0 - 9.5. In terms of stability, it is relatively stable under normal conditions, but it should be protected from light. It should not come into contact with organic solvents, strong oxidants, and other substances to avoid potential dangerous reactions. Toxicological studies show that some components have certain toxicity data. For example, the oral LD50 of carbon black is 15,400 mg/kg (rat), and the oral LD50 of titanium dioxide is greater than 20,000 mg/kg (rat), etc.

Ecological, Disposal, and Transport Information

Currently, information regarding the ecological toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and other ecological aspects of this water-based ink is still unclear. However, the product does not contain endocrine-disrupting substances. In terms of disposal, it is strictly prohibited to discard it together with household garbage, and it should not be allowed to enter the sewage system. Uncleaned packaging should be disposed of in accordance with official regulations. In terms of transportation, this product is not classified as dangerous goods and has no relevant information such as UN numbers or transport hazard classes.

Regulatory Information and Other Key Points

From a regulatory perspective, the components of this water-based ink are not listed in the lists of hazardous substances regulated by multiple EU regulations. However, specific usage still needs to comply with relevant regulatory requirements. Currently, no chemical safety assessment has been carried out. In addition, the MSDS also includes explanations of abbreviations for many technical terms to facilitate users' accurate understanding of the document content.

This Water-Based Ink MSDS provides comprehensive safety guidance for the production, use, transportation, and disposal of water-based inks. Whether it is manufacturing enterprises, printing manufacturers, or relevant regulatory authorities, they should strictly follow the specifications therein to ensure that water-based inks can play their role while maximizing the protection of personnel safety and environmental health.
