How do I know if my ink is water-based?

Date: Sep 01 2024  From: Star Color

I bought a bucket of ink and need to distinguish whether the ink I bought is water-based ink. How should we distinguish it?

Check the packaging of ink
If there is packaging and labeling, we can first look at the label on the ink packaging barrel, which usually has clear markings indicating the type of ink, including whether it is water-based ink.
If there is no clear label on the packaging, we can also open the packaging to see the form and odor of the ink. The color of water-based ink may vary depending on the formula, but it usually does not have a strong irritating odor like solvent based ink. If there is a noticeable solvent or irritating odor, it may not be water-based ink.

Physical property testing
We can test the physical properties of ink to distinguish whether it is water-based ink. First, we look at its flowability. Waterborne ink usually has good flowability and moderate viscosity. It can be measured using a viscometer or observed for its flow state through simple manual stirring. Compared to solvent based inks, water-based inks may have lower viscosity and better fluidity.
The drying speed of ink can also be tested by applying a small amount of ink on paper, napkins, etc., and observing its drying speed and effect after drying.

How do I know if my ink is water-based?
Due to the fact that water-based ink is usually diluted with water and comes into contact with napkins, the napkins absorb water, making it easy to determine whether it is water-based ink based on the condition of the napkins.
Of course, if the above methods are used by professionals, they may quickly identify whether it is water-based ink. If it is used by non professionals, they may not be able to identify it. In this case, a more accurate way is to entrust a third-party testing agency for testing. If the conditions permit, the sample can be sent to a professional agency for component testing. By detecting key information such as solvent composition and resin type in ink, it is possible to accurately determine whether it is water-based ink.

Based on the comprehensive information from the above aspects, a more accurate judgment can be made. If the ink meets the characteristics of water-based ink in terms of packaging labels, physical properties, environmental friendliness, and safety, it can be preliminarily judged as water-based ink. If there are still doubts or uncertainties, it is recommended to undergo professional testing or consult relevant experts.

As an ink supplier, Huizhou Zhongzhixing specializes in producing high-quality water-based ink, which can be applied to materials such as paper, cardboard boxes, plastic films, etc. It not only has high adhesion, but also is more environmentally friendly.
