Precautions for printing water-based ink on BOPP film

Date: Aug 08 2023  From: Star Color

1.Surface preparation: Ensure that the BOPP film surface is clean and free from any contaminants that could interfere with ink adhesion. Clean the surface using a suitable cleaning solution or solvent.

2.Ink compatibility: Use water-based inks that are specifically formulated for printing on plastic substrates like BOPP. These inks should have good adhesion and drying properties on non-porous surfaces.

3.Ink viscosity: Adjust the viscosity of the ink to ensure proper flow and coverage. The viscosity requirements may vary depending on the specific ink and printing equipment being used. Consult the ink manufacturer's guidelines or conduct viscosity tests to determine the optimal range.

4.Ink adhesion promoter: Consider using an ink adhesion promoter or primer specifically designed for enhancing ink adhesion on plastic films. These products can improve the ink's bond with the BOPP surface and enhance print durability.

5.Drying/curing process: Water-based inks require proper drying or curing to ensure good adhesion and resistance to smudging or rubbing. Follow the ink manufacturer's recommendations for drying temperature, time, and curing methods. This may involve air drying, heat curing, or a combination of both.

6.Avoid excessive heat: BOPP films are heat-sensitive, so be cautious with drying or curing temperatures. Excessive heat can cause the film to shrink or deform, affecting the print quality and overall appearance.

7.Testing and quality control: Conduct thorough testing to ensure that the printed ink adheres well to the BOPP film, resists rubbing and scratching, and provides the desired visual appearance. Monitor and control variables such as ink adhesion, color vibrancy, and drying/curing conditions to maintain consistent quality.

8.Environmental conditions: Maintain appropriate humidity and temperature levels in the printing environment. High humidity can affect ink drying, while low humidity can cause static buildup on the film surface, affecting ink adhesion and print quality.

9.Post-print handling: Allow sufficient time for the printed BOPP film to dry or cure completely before handling, stacking, or further processing. Premature handling can lead to ink smudging or transfer.

10.Storage and transportation: Store and transport the printed BOPP film rolls in a controlled environment to prevent exposure to excessive heat, humidity, or other damaging conditions that could affect ink adhesion and film quality.

Remember to consult with your ink and equipment manufacturers for specific recommendations and guidelines tailored to your printing setup and requirements.
