  1. Poor stability: Excessively high or low pH values can cause chemical reactions among the dispersant, pigments, resins, and other components in the ink, leading to precipitation or gelation, which affects the stability and printing effect of the ink.
  2. Viscosity changes: Changes in pH value directly affect the viscosity of the ink. An excessively high pH value may make the ink too thick, making it difficult to flow during printing; whereas an excessively low pH value may make the ink too fluid, affecting the uniformity of the ink layer.

II. Steps for Measuring the pH Value of UV Flexo Ink

Measuring the pH value of ink requires precise instruments and correct operating methods. Here are the standard measurement steps:

  1. Prepare tools:

    • pH meter (preferably a digital pH meter with high precision and automatic temperature compensation)
    • Glass or plastic container (should be clean and无污染)
    • Distilled water (for diluting the ink to ensure accurate measurement results)
    • Standard pH buffer solution (for calibrating the pH meter)
  2. Calibrate the pH meter:
    Before measurement, calibrate the pH meter using standard buffer solutions with known pH values. Common buffer solutions include pH 4.00, pH 7.00, and pH 10.00. During calibration, ensure that the pH meter displays values consistent with the standard buffer solutions.

  3. Sample preparation:
    Take an appropriate amount of ink sample, usually about 10-20 milliliters, and dilute it to a certain concentration with distilled water to ensure that the ink is not too thick or too thin during measurement, which could affect the accuracy of the pH measurement. The typical dilution ratio is ink sample to distilled water = 1:1.

  4. Measure the pH value:
    Immerse the calibrated pH meter probe into the diluted ink sample and wait a few seconds until the pH meter displays a stable reading. Record the pH value at this time.

    After each measurement, ensure that the pH meter probe is cleaned to avoid cross-contamination. Record the measurement results and compare them with the standard range.

  2. Use alkaline substances to adjust the pH value:
    For ink with a too-low pH value (acidic), you can adjust it using alkaline substances, such as sodium hydroxide, ammonia water, or specialized alkaline adjusters. Ensure not to overuse them to prevent the pH value from becoming too high.

  3. Fine-tuning and testing:
    After adjusting the pH value, repeatedly test the ink's pH to ensure it remains within the target range. After each adjustment, it is recommended to let the ink sit for a while before measuring again to ensure the adjustment effect is stable.

  4. Use pH stabilizers:
    To maintain long-term pH stability, some ink suppliers may recommend using pH stabilizers. These additives can effectively prevent fluctuations in the pH value, ensuring the stability and printing quality of the ink.

Correctly measuring and adjusting the pH value of UV flexo ink is the foundation for ensuring ink quality, improving printing efficiency, and extending equipment lifespan.
